How to collect the money you've already earned

Late invoices are a growth problem in disguise. Here's a simple routine to get paid faster without losing customers.

Every dollar sitting in an unpaid invoice is a dollar you can't spend on a new truck, a new hire or an ad. Before you chase new sales, collect the old ones.

Send the invoice the same day

The longer you wait to bill, the longer they wait to pay. Invoice when the job is done, not at the end of the week.

Make paying easy

Put the amount, the due date and one clear way to pay at the top. Every extra step is another reason to put it off.

Use a friendly, fixed reminder schedule

A short note a few days before it's due, one on the due date, and one a week after. Same tone every time: polite, specific, with the invoice attached.

Watch for the slide

A customer who pays a little later every month is telling you something. Call them before it becomes a 60-day problem.

Decide your line

Know ahead of time when you pause work for an account that's too far behind. Deciding in the moment is where owners lose money.
